I think your most important point is for everyone to "lighten up". Most people are well intentioned when they say "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays" or "How are you?". Even if they do not mean it too strongly, they are probably in a well intentioned mood. So... regardless of what they say, we all should take it lightly and we should not jump into conclusions about someone trying to convert the other, impose religion or alienate anyone. Even if they are, a couple of words will not hurt us so much.

The other thing to keep in mind is: if someone invited you to a different culture/religion celebration, would you attend? Many people would say 'yes', even if it is out of curiosity or friendship. Chances are the recipient of the religiously loaded "Christmas" reference would take it lightly and with curiosity as well.

The other day, I was listening to a station that uses the slogan: "calling it like it is: MERRY CHRISTMAS..."

And to be honest I would have never second guessed the whole merry xmas/happy holidays/happy Hanuka thing. The truth is that saying any of those lines is as real and honest as asking a stranger: "How's it going", or "how are you", mostly we dont really care, and IF we actually do, it does not matter how we ask.

I have to accept that the Happy Holidays thing only gets my attention when its made for proving a point, instead of a natural way of saying it.

Soon someone will come up with a politically correct version of "Bless you" when you sneeze. BAH!
